Our Story

Carol and Laurie Fry founded Unique Fabrics in 1986 with an underlying philosophy of providing leading-edge style, high quality products and fantastic service. Their collections encompass a broad range of textiles, wallcoverings, passementerie and drapery hardware, catering to all residential and commercial requirements.

In 2026, Unique Fabrics entered a new chapter when it passed into the hands of the Rysenbry family. Our story in textiles reaches back to Amsterdam in the 1950s, where Nicolaas Rysenbry made the decision to move his family to New Zealand in search of new beginnings. He brought with him a love of cloth, and a belief that the right fabric can make a house feel like home.

Over the past seven decades, that passion has been refined into craft. We have spent those years scouring the globe to bring you the world's most beautiful and functional textiles, each chosen for its character, quality and the way it performs in real life. We pride ourselves on our relationships with the mills we work with and the clients we serve, because great design is always a collaboration. Through every cloth, we connect people to one another, and to the spaces they share.

As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for the legacy we've inherited and excitement for what comes next. Our aim is to honour that foundation while bringing fresh ideas, new collections and the same commitment to quality and service that has defined Unique Fabrics for four decades.
